Kendon Technical Insight Series: Proper Bike Tie-Down Procedure

We’ve all seen the miscellaneous couch or TV or mattress on the side of the freeway. Accidentally abandoned when it fell off the truck or trailer that was carrying it, most likely because it wasn’t tied down properly. Don’t be that guy! Protect your favorite toy with proper tie-down technique. Properly tying your bike down on a Kendon trailer is critical for the safety of your bike, your tow vehicle, your trailer, and the safety of those around you. Be sure to always follow these rules and check your tie-downs regularly, especially on longer trips.

Tie-Downs

It’s always best to use heavy-duty ratcheting tie-downs straps. Always use four tie-downs to secure your bikes. Four tie-downs keep your bike in place and keep the rear section of the trailer locked in the open position. Order a set of Kendon heavy-duty ratchet tie-down straps here.

Front Tie-Down Procedure

Attach two ratchet tie-downs to the front forks or handlebars of your bike and to the front tie-down outriggers on the trailer. Tighten the tie-downs so that the front suspension of the motorcycle is compressed to at least 75% of total travel.Your suspension should be compressed such that no further movement or compression is possible by hand to ensure that hooks do not disengage while towing.

Rear Tie-Down Procedure

Attach two ratchet tie-downs to the rear portion of your motorcycle. Consider using the rear footpegs, frame, subframe, swingarm, etc. for attachment points. Attach the other ends of the tie-downs to the trailer rear tie-down points, usually locate on the axle near the axle. Tighten the tie-downs so that the rear suspension of the motorcycle is compressed to at least 75% of total travel. Your suspension should be compressed such that no further movement or compression is possible by hand to ensure that hooks do not disengage while towing.

Loose Ends

Secure the loose ends of your tie-downs out of the way so that they do not interfere with towing operation or damage your bike during towing. Four points, four stars: If you follow the above instructions and always tie your bike down with four tie-downs on four attachment points, you’ll have a four-star towing experience and you, your Kendon trailer, and your bike should arrive safe and sound.
